The efficacy of elastic compression stockings for the prevention of post-thrombotic syndrome after proximal deep-vein thrombosis is controversial. Results of this study suggest that adequate use of stockings provides a clinically important reduction in post-thrombotic syndrome in subjects with ultrasound evidence of residual vein thrombosis at 3 months. In patients without residual vein thrombosis, such an effect is absent.
MCL-1 and BCL-2 are frequently overexpressed in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and critical for the survival of AML cells and AML stem cells. This study showed that MCL-1 regulates cell metabolism, leukemia-stroma interactions, and protects leukemia cells from BCL-2 inhibition. Treatment strategies involving combined MCL-1 and BCL-2 inhibition could improve the outcomes of AML patients.
Heterozygotes for beta thalassemia (βThal+) constitute a non-negligible proportion of blood donors in the Mediterranean area, Africa, Asia and in minority groups in the USA. This study shows that βThal+ red blood cells are unique in terms of susceptibility to hemolysis, redox homeostasis and nitrogen/hexosamine-related metabolism during storage. It is conceivable that βThal+ individuals may represent a novel, high quality, “good storer” group of donors.
The mechanisms by which β1-tubulin, the platelet and megakaryocyte lineage-restricted tubulin isoform, drives platelet production and function is poorly understood. This study demonstrated that post-translational tubulin polymodifications spatially regulate motor proteins to drive proplatelet formation in megakaryocytes, and the cytoskeletal reorganization required for thrombus formation.
